Do journalists giving stock tips on TV need SEBI registration?
In force
Journalists on the payroll of a media organisation (newspaper/TV) don't need their own SEBI registration. But if they make recommendations or offer opinions on securities through public media, those calls must be based on an SEBI-registered RA's research report, and the journalist must disclose their own trading-related details plus the name, registration status, and financial interest of the underlying RA/intermediary in the subject company.
What SEBI says, word for word
FAQ Circular, Q20“The journalists who are on the payrolls of media agency such as newspaper or television are not required to get registered with SEBI. However, if they make recommendations or offer an opinion concerning securities or public offers through public media, such recommendations/opinions shall be based on the research reports of SEBI registered research analyst... they shall also disclose the name of RA/intermediary, its registration status and details of financial interest.”Source: SEBI/HO/MIRSD/MIRSD-PoD/P/CIR/2025/105, dated July 23, 2025 Open document ↗
